Living Seeds – Heirloom vegetable seeds to order online

Anyone remotely interested in heirloom vegetables should check out the Livingseeds website, offering the biggest selection of locally grown heirloom and open-pollinated vegetable varieties in South Africa. And you can order online. I had such fun reading through the list of varieties, placing my order and collecting the parcel a few days later. Inside the standard brown postage envelope were the seed packs, beautifully packaged and labelled in recyclable and biodegradable paper.

The best part of browsing the site is the weird and wonderful names: Purple Dragon carrots; Hillbilly, Cherokee Chocolate and Boxcar Willie tomatoes; Goblin squash; and Turks Turban pumpkins (that really do look like a Turks Turban).

Let’s just say I didn’t hold back on my order…

PS The pumpkin pic on the homepage was taken by my very talented photographer friend Brenda.

Bern I dreamt I was eating an heirloom tomato salad last night, with tomatoes of all colours and shapes. If you ever sell any veggies let me know, I would be super keen to buy.

That’s so funny you ask, as so many people have been wanting to buy from me. I’m only just getting started, but will definitely look into selling heirlooms from possibly February next year. Would be a fun project. The tomatoes I’ve just ordered would be perfect for your ‘dream’ salad. Black cherry tomatoes and those huge original Beefsteak ones.

Oooh… very adventurous Mist! Jelly Melons!! I might have to come over and get one from you when they ripen so I can save the seeds… If I have any extra, we can do a trade.
