Cape Point Vineyards picnics, Noordhoek

I’ve always known that I’m privileged to live in what I believe is one of the most beautiful parts of the Cape. And it’s just got that much better. Cape Point Vineyards has opened up to the public for the very first time – and i’m not talking about the tasting centre as you come off Chapman’s Peak. The new picnic site is above the old manor house and dam as you come off Silvermine Drive. You can’t miss it really, as the entrance is flanked by two lion statues carved from Carrera marble. (A fitting entrance if you ask me).
The grounds are pristine, with a manicured lawn rolling down to the dam. You can make yourself at home on the grass or sit under the Bedouin tent which has been very cleverly constructed as protection from the wind. Yes, it’s windy in Noordhoek…

So, what’s on offer? Lunch-time picnic baskets are served from 12 till 3pm, but you need to book a day in advance. Evenings are cheese boards with charcuterie served from 5 till 8pm. The boards are lavish, to say the least. The cheeses are of the highest quality and there are at least 5 different varieties. (Winemaker Duncan Savage’s wife makes the chilli jam that accompanies honey-roasted nuts and olives). The service and wines are exceptional – I’m quite partial to the Chardonnay myself, even though the Sauvignon Blanc is most celebrated.

I’m going to be spending a whole lot of time up there on that mountain slope with all my friends and family, so be sure to book! 021 789 0094; tasting@cape-point.com
