Thai Café, Steenberg Village

You may well have heard of the party band Me & Mr Brown? Well, the lead vocalist, Daniel Green, is my brother-in-law and his wife Lindi is my business partner at Café Roux. And they’ve recently opened Thai Café in Steenberg Village – so it’s no surprise then that I’m loving it!
It’s a great franchise and the founder, Chris James (who also recently opened Erawan Thai Restaurant & Bar in Wynberg Chelsea Village) flies all his chefs in from Thailand.
I’m slowly working my way through the menu and right now the Crispy Duck (pictured above and on my home page) is what’s getting me over the mountain from Noordhoek. It’s one of the chef’s specialities and consists of half a deboned duck on a nest of fragrant vegetables with mushrooms, chilli, garlic and Thai herbs.
Another favourite is the Phad Pak Ruam:

And, of course, Tall Paul’s favourite Phad Thai (and this is when you know you’re eating authentic Thai food: when you close your eyes midst mouthfuls of authentic Thai Green curry or Phad Thai and you feel like you’re sitting amongst the palms in Phuket. Not the packet stuff you get from most any café these days.)

I think the major point of difference with this particular Thai Café is the interior. It has a Wagamama-esque feel to it. The kind of place you actually want to sit down in, instead of grabbing a takeaway on the run. Chefs work behind an open kitchen counter in front of a huge backdrop of a river scene in Bangkok. As if the sights and sounds of the chefs cooking aren’t enough, you’re immediately transported to the floating markets of the Chao Praya River. Here’s Mark, woking it!:

So next time you don’t feel like cooking, here’s a useful little number to add to your address book:
Thai Café 021 701 8000, open Monday to Sunday, 11.30 till late.

Hi Colleen. The crispy duck is seriously good, and right now I’m loving the Khao Soi Chang Mai: egg noodles and pork in a delicious Thai curry with lemon and onions. YUM. Hope you’ll be able to try it soon. x

Thanks Sam, unfortunately can’t claim the pics though, as these ones were taken by a friend of Lindi’s. There is also a branch in De Waterkant if it’s too much of a trek from Sea Point!
